BCDP First Vice Chair Ed Kramer has stepped down. We greatly appreciate his service and commitment to the Buncombe County Democratic Party over the past year.

We will hold a County Executive Committee Meeting on January 31st to elect a new First Vice Chair to serve until 2027. There is currently one declared candidate, Ken Wheatley.

    Ken Wheatley

    CANDIDATE FOR FIRST VICE CHAIR

    Ken is a husband, father, grandfather, and a fervent supporter of Democratic values. He and his wife, Lorraine, have lived in Fairview since 2022.

    He has been an active member of the BCDP events committee for three years, led the vans-to-polls-from-public-housing effort in 2024, served as a delegate to the County and State conventions, canvassed with his wife, flipped burgers at Party social events, and helped wherever needed to support GOTV efforts. 

    Ken is the Founder and Principal Advisor of Royal Security Group LLC, a business and security management consulting practice established in 2014. He is also a forensic expert in premises liability and negligent security cases, both plaintiff and defense, across the U.S., involving murder, rape, and assault.

    He served as the Senior Vice President and Chief Security Officer for Sony Electronics’ global operations for 24 years. During his tenure, he led operations including Corporate Security (including 6 Olympics), National Dealer Sales Compliance, Brand Integrity, Business Continuity and Corporate Resilience, Competitive Intelligence, Non-Financial Risk Management, Food Service, Ground Fleet, Administrative Services, and Temporary Staffing, overseeing a staff of 18 and a $100 million budget.

    He also served as an FBI Special Agent in investigative and undercover operations involving kidnapping, espionage, drugs, fugitives, and violent criminal apprehensions (VICAP). He currently serves as one of the 14 members of the Senior Advisory Group with the FBI’s Domestic Security Alliance Council (DSAC) and as an Advisor to the FBI’s Threat Resilience Information Sharing Committee (TRISC) in Washington, D.C.

    Ken was the CEO of the Challenged Athletes Foundation and has held senior leadership and advisory roles at numerous domestic and international organizations, including serving as Chairman of the Lung Cancer Committee with the California Department of Public Health; as a member of the Chairman’s Strategic Advisory Group with the International Organization of Standardization in Geneva; as a member of the S.T.E.M. Advisory Board with National University; as Chairman and President of the San Diego Mid-County Transportation Management Association; and as President of the International Security Management Association, the global association of Chief Security Officers.

    He is a volunteer leader, trainer, and sawyer (an Idaho-trained tree cutter) with Team Rubicon, an international veteran-led disaster response organization. He has responded to hurricanes, floods, and wildfires across California, Florida, and the Bahamas. Team Rubicon also responded to Hurricane Helene in Buncombe County. 

    He has taught at the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA, and has served as a guest lecturer and adjunct at the University of California San Diego, California State University College of Business Administration, Florida International University, and other institutions.

    Ken earned his BA degree from Florida International University and his master’s degree (summa cum laude) from Webster University. He has completed Executive Education Programs at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, the University of Michigan Business School, and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He is board-certified in Business and Organizational Security Management, having earned his CPP in 1997 and recertifying every three years.

    He is a Vietnam-era veteran and served as a Non-Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Air Force.
